LATEST NEWS UPDATE

January 11, 2011 -- Regional Plan Association Releases Report on High Speed Rail  A New York City based planning group, the Regional Plan Association today released a detailed report describing where High Speed Rail works best.  You can view the report here High Speed Rail in America  Interestingly, the Empire Corridor links two of the top megaregions in which HSR works best: the Northeast Megaregion and the Great Lakes Megaregion.  This important link reaffirms that New York's Empire Corridor should remain near the top of the Federal Government's plan to reinvest in our nations passenger rail infrastructure.

December 10, 2010 -- U.S. Department of Transportation Redirects $1.195 Billion in High-Speed Rail Funds US Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced today that the Federal HSR funds that Wisconsin and Ohio had rejected would be redirected towards projects in other States. Due to vocal efforts from both Governor Paterson and Governor-elect Cuomo and a successful grassroots advocacy campaign, New York received the fifth highest amount of funding for individual projects at $7.3 million.

This is a major victory for High Speed Rail initiatives across the country as Secretary LaHood has held firm to his commitment to continue funding this worthy program in the face of opposition from various states.

At the Conference, attended by 350 people, we heard about the benefits, opportunities, and challenges of bringing high speed rail to America. Many elected officials were there to speak, including Governor David Paterson, Congressman Paul Tonko, Senator Malcolm A. Smith, and Norman Mineta. Deb Warner also hosted a session, High Speed Rail in the Empire State, about the latest progress on our goal of connecting New York City to Buffalo, and, possibly, New York City to Montreal.

October 29, 2010 -- Creation of High Speed Rail Planning Board -- The High Speed Rail NY Coalition commends the creation of New York High Speed Rail Planning Board announced today by Governor Paterson. The board will play a key role in advancing the high speed rail initiative across the state. Click here for additional information HSR Planning Board nx rel 10.29.10.pdf

Hijacking the Ethan Allen

Some modern-day Green Mountain Boys are determined to revive a twelve-year-old scheme to divert the route of the Ethan Allen trains eastward from Glenville Junction (between Schenectady and Saratoga Springs). This diversion will spirit away Rutland passengers out of New York State on a sylvan ramble through Mechanicville, Hoosick Junction, North Bennington, and Manchester.Last July, the Saratoga and North Creek Railway introduced a brand of high-class passenger rail service that had gone…See More

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IMPACT

The economic development impact of trains is as important as the transportation provided. Obviously affected by the availability of the highly-successful Saratoga and North Creek Railway, there are new owners of the Garnet Hill Lodge located just nine miles west of the North Creek Depot. The four-season vacation center provides a variety of lodging facilities and a full-service restaurant just an 18-minute drive away from North Creek.See More

FUNDING FOR THREE SOUTHERN TIER RAIL LINES

Funding totaling $3,250,000 has been awarded to improve three rail lines in Chenango County and Steuben County under the CFA Economic Development Program. The Chenango County Industrial Development Authority will receive an award of $722,422 to restore the Binghamton-Utica rail corridor that was damaged by the 2006 flooding between Chenango Forks and Sherburne. The project will replace the railroad embankments and drainage structures, realign stream channels to their original courses under the…See More

REGIONAL PASSENGER RAIL STUDY

The New York-Vermont Bi-State Intercity Passenger Rail Study continues to provide an example of the cooperation and foresight that other rail planners in New York State might emulate. The study is now evaluating two alternatives that envision an additional route through Mechanicville, North Bennington, and Manchester connecting with the Ethan Allen corridor at Glenville and at Rutland. The total 217-mile corridor will involve existing track owned by Canadian Pacific Rail, Pan Am Railway, and…See More

Fortunately, the rail projects that are needed in New York State are not classified as "high-speed rail."

Shame on Washington!

They just zeroed out all high-speed rail funding from next year's budget. What opponents of rail funding are vulnerable in next year's elections?I think the Congresswoman from near our coalition founders was outspoken against funding and barely won last time.See More

PASSENGER RAIL CONNECTION WITH SOUTHERN TIER

An opportunity to connect trains to and from Binghamton with Amtrak service in Utica is now a possibility in my opinion. The Chenango County Industrial Development Agency submitted an application on October 31 for funding to repair over 40 miles of track between Sherburne and Chenango Forks that was damaged by flooding in 2006.Although the application is to restore freight rail service, there is the opportunity to have the tracks share freight service and passenger service. The opening of the…See More

Currently, CP-75 to C-169 is owned by CSX, always has been.  In the early part of 2012, Amtrak will take over the operations from CSX in a 24 year lease.   Major change.  Paul

Grade Crossings

On September 24, 1936, trains in Syracuse moved from using the center of Washington Street to use a new elevated location that is now the site of Interstate Route 690. It is not generally known that the project began in April of 1899.Construction of this monumental project of eliminating 62 grade crossings involved 37 years of design engineering, confrontational negotiations with the New York Central Railroad, and the acquisition and demolition of properties within the new right-of-way. Those…See More
